Amongst lagoons, on a great plain, Torrevieja is located, a destination of great importance. The current municipality grew next to a tower (Torre), the old one (la Vieja), which gave it its name along with some natural characteristics that have marked its history and its daily life. The area boasts some splendid beaches, with which it has developed its tourist capacity in combination with its seafaring and salt-making tradition. Today, also, the production of Salt, one of the main European producers, has a competitor in international recognition, the Cuban dances and its International contest, declared as being of International tourist interest, which celebrates in homage to the “Torrevejenses” that traded with Cuba, colony from which they brought these melodies.
The “Eras de Sal” enclosure receives each year, between July and August, the International Cuban Dance and Polyphony Contest, declared as being of International Tourist Interest, in which are brought together the best National and International groups and Chorales. Next to the sea, the history of how the sailors who transported from Cuba the rhythm of the Cuban dances with their exchanges for salt are recalled. This is not the only cultural event of interest which is celebrated in the locality, given that throughout the year diverse events, prizes and competitions take place, such as: The International Poetry Competition, the “Ciudad de Torrevieja” Novel prize, the National Naval model prize, the National Sculpture prize, the Photography competition, the Painting competition, the local Poetry and Prose competition, the Literary and Pictorial competition or the traditional Torrevieja Book Fair. |
